Basket Collections

  • Assessing and Cleaning Baskets In this video, Nicole Grabow, Objects Conservator at the Midwest Art Conservation Center, provides a demonstration of a conservation technique for cleaning baskets. Some of the topics covered include: assessing the conditions of baskets, evaluating if baskets needs cleaning, use of brushes, handling baskets, and the materials needed for cleaning of baskets. This tutorial supplements Grabow’s session “Cleaning and Mending Baskets,” given at the 2016 ATALM annual conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 10-13, 2016.
  • Creating Supportive Inserts for Baskets In this video, Nicole Grabow, Objects Conservator at the Midwest Art Conservation Center, demonstrates how to work with baskets that need support or inserts, describing how each basket presents unique handing and preservation challenges. Grabow shows how to create three different types of supports for baskets: a basket ring, an ethafoam insert, and a sewn soft Tyvek insert. This tutorial supplements Grabow's session, "Creating supportive inserts for baskets" given at the 2016 ATALM annual conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 10-13, 2016.
  • Care and Curation of Basketry In this video, Nancy Odegaard and Gina Watkinson, both conservators at the Arizona State Museum, discuss museum stewardship techniques for basketry by sharing their experiences working on the "Woven Wonders Basketry Preservation Project," a Save America's Treasures project at the Arizona State Museum. Through a hands-on demonstration, the presenters show how to identify baskets, handle them appropriately, and how to clean and mount them safely. They also provide some best practices on cataloging, photographing, documenting, storing and labeling basket collections. This session was part of the 2015 ATALM annual conference held in Washington, DC on September 9-12, 2015.
