In Native communities across America, archives, libraries, and museums serve as centers for cultural continuity. They provide essential services and are highly valued by community members. In the 48% of Native communities without cultural facilities, Tribal Leaders have ranked the creation of cultural facilities as a top priority.
A 2018 Cultural Facilities study conducted by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums found that a major impediment to planning, designing, and building new cultural facilities is a lack of staff expertise to manage the process,, followed by the high cost of project planning, acquiring funding, and identifying qualified planners, architects, builders, and exhibit designers experienced with the process of designing, building, and managing cultural centers in Native communities.

The four major components of the project are:
- The appointment of a National Leadership Council that will contribute content, conduct site visits, provide consultations, and guide the development of resources.More Information/Sign Up
- The compilation of information on model cultural facilities built in the last 20 years.
- The compilation of a directory of professionals with experience with the planning and construction of cultural facilities.
- Direct assistance to five Native communities that are ready to commence planning cultural centers, including professional guidance by a team of planners, architects, and other professionals.Apply Here
